1.0. Requirements for the titles designated in 0.31.

1.1

Grandmaster: Obtained by achieving any of the following:

1.11

Two or more GM results in events covering at least 24 games (30 games without a round robin or Olympiad) and a rating of at least 2500 in the FIDE Rating List current at the time the FIDE Congress considers the application, or within seven years of the first title result being achieved. (See 1.7, 10.10) (GA '93)

1.12

Qualification for the Candidates Competition for the World Championship.

1.13

One GM result in a FIDE Interzonal tournament.

1.14

Winning the Women's World Championship match. (GA '93)

1.15

Winner on tiebreak in the World Junior Championship. (GA '93 and EB '99)

1.16

A tie for first place in the World Junior Championship is equivalent to one 9-game GM result. (GA '93)

1.17

Winner on tiebreak in the Continental Individual or Continental Junior Championship is equivalent to one 9-game GM result. (GA '95 and EB '99) Arab and Centro American - Caribbean Youth events will be treated as Continental Championships. (GA '93)

1.18

Clear first place in the Women's Candidates Tournament is equivalent to one 9-game GM result. (GA '93)

1.19

One 13-game GM result in the Olympiad will lead to the award of the full title. (GA '93).

1.20

Winner of the World Senior Championship (GA 97)

1.2

International Master: Obtained by achieving any of the following:

Two or more IM results in events covering at least 24 games (30 games without a round robin or Olympiad) and a rating of at least 2400 in the FIDE Rating List current at the time of the FIDE Congress considering the application, or within seven years of the first title result being achieved. (See 1.7) (GA '93)

1.22

First place in any one of the following events:
Women's Candidates Tournament
Zonal Tournament
Continental Individual Championship
(EB '99) Winner on tiebreak in the following events:
Continental Individual Junior Championship,
Arab Individual and Junior Championships
Centroamerican-Caribbean Junior Championship
World Boys-18 Championship (GA '93)
Commonwealth Chess Championship (EB '99)

International Braille Chess Association World (IBCA) Championship (Champion is given a rating of 2205)
International Committee of Silent Chess (ICSC) World Championship (champion is given a rating of 2205 (GA '98))
International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) World Championship (Champion is given a rating of 2205 (GA '98))

1.221

In the event of a tie for first place in any of the above events in 1.22, each of the tied players shall be awarded the title of International Master, subject to a maximum of three players.

1.23

The top three medalists in the World Junior Championship shall receive the International Master title. (GA '93)

1.24

Qualification for the Interzonal Tournament of the World Championship cycle.

1.25

One IM result in the cycle of the Individual World Championship, of not less than 13 games. When such a tournament is played with preliminaries and finals, the results will be pooled.

1.26

A score of 66 2/3rd % or better in a Zonal Tournament or sub zonal tournament approved by the Presidential Board of FIDE (PB '98) of at least 9 games. When such a tournament is played with preliminaries and finals, the results will be pooled.

1.27

Clear first place on tiebreak (EB '99) in the World Boys-16 Championship and the Continental Boys-18 and Boys-16 Championships is equivalent to one 9-game IM result. (GA '93)

1.28

One 13-game IM result in the Olympiad will lead to the award of the full title. (GA '93)

1.3

FIDE Master: Obtained by achieving any of the following:

1.31

A rating of at least 2300 after the player has played at least 24 rated games. The national federation is responsible for the payment of the fee established in the financial regulations, upon which the title will be awarded.

1.32

First place in any one of the following events:
World Championships for players Youth-10 to 16
IBCA World Junior Championship, given a rating of 2205
ICSC World Junior Championship; given a rating of 2205 (GA '98)
IPCA World Junior Championship; given a rating of 2205 (GA'98)

1.33

First place in one of the following events:
Continental Youth-10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 Championships
Arab Youth-10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 Championships

1.331

In the event of a tie for first place in any of the above events, each of the tied players shall be awarded the title of FIDE Master, subject to a maximum of three players.

1.34

A score of 50% or better in a Zonal Tournament or sub zonal tournament approved by the Presidential Board of FIDE (PB '98) of at least 9 games. When such a tournament is played with preliminaries and finals, the results will be pooled.

1.35

Runner-up of IBCA World Championship, given a rating of 2205.
Runner-up of ICSC World Championship; given a rating of 2205 (GA '98)
Runner-up of IPCA World Championship; given a rating of 2205 (GA '98)

1.4

Woman Grandmaster: Obtained by achieving any of the following:

Winner on tiebreak in the Continental Individual or Continental Girls Championship is equivalent to one 9-game WGM result. (GA '95, EB '99)
Arab and Centro American - Caribbean Youth events will be treated as Continental Championships. (GA '93)

1.47

One 13-game WGM result in the Olympiad will lead to the award of the full title. (GA '93)

1.48

Winner of the World Senior Championship (GA 97)

1.5

Woman International Master:
Obtained by achieving any one of the following:

Two or more WIM results in events covering at least 24 games (30 games without a round robin or Olympiad) and a rating of at least 2200 in the FIDE Rating List current at the time of the FIDE Congress considering the application, or within seven years of the first title result being achieved. Qualification for the Interzonal Tournament for the Women's World Championship.

First place in any of the following events:
Continental Women's Championship
Women's Zonal Tournament (GA '94)
Arab Women's Championship
World Girls-18 Championship
Arab Girls Championship (GA '94)
Continental Girls-20 Championship
Centro-American & Caribbean-20 (GA '94)
Commonwealth Chess Championship (EB '99)

International Committee of Silent Chess World (ICSC) World Women's Championship (up to in maximum of three women) (GA '97)
International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) World Women's Championship (up to in maximum of three women) (GA '98)

1.57

Clear first place in the World Girls-16 Championship and the Continental Girls-16 and 18 Championships is equivalent to one 9-game WIM result. (GA '93)

1.58

One 13-game WIM result in the Olympiad will lead to the award of the full title. (GA '93)

1.6

Woman FIDE Master: Obtained by achieving any one of the following:

A rating of at least 2100 after the player has played at least 24 games. The national federation is responsible for the payment of the fee established in the financial regulations, upon which the title will be awarded.

1.62

First place in any one of the following events:
World Girls-10 to 16 Championships
Continental Girls 10 to 18 Championships
IBCA Women's World Champion, given a rating of 2005.
ICSC Women's World Champion, given a rating of 2005 (GA '98)
IPCA Women's World Champion, given a rating of 2005 (GA '98)

1.621

In the event of a tie for first place in any of the above events, each of the tied players shall be awarded the title of WFM, subject to a maximum of three players.

1.63

A score of 50% or better in a Woman's Zonal tournament or sub-zonal tournament approved by the Presidential Board of FIDE (PB '98) of at least 9 games. When such a tournament is played with preliminaries and finals, the results will be pooled.

  1. For players conferred the GM, IM, WGM or WIM titles conditional on attaining the minimum rating within seven years of the first title result being achieved, a player who achieves the minimum rating in the middle of a rating period (even in the middle of a tournament) may disregard his subsequent tournament results for purposes of the title application. (GA '93).
  2. International title norms at continental and world team competitions shall be established even in 7 rounds events (EB '99)
1.8

FIDE Category Player (GA '98)

The title of FIDE category player is conferred on a player who has a rating and is listed on the FIDE Rating list. To receive this title, the player shall apply as follows :

  1. He shall forward his application to the FIDE Secretariat with an application fee of SFr 100.- through his national federation. The application shall contain his rating and the date of publication of this rating in the FIDE rating list, the players full name, address and date of birth.
  2. The national federation of the applicant shall retain 20% of his application fee for administrative purposes and remit the balance to the FIDE Secretariat with the player application.
  3. On receipt of the fee and the details of the player application, the FIDE Secretariat shall retain SFr 60.- and remit the balance of SFr 20.- to the account of the title and rating committee while a certificate signed by the FIDE President shall be forwarded to the Federation of the player.
